Del and Jacob meet for lunch, ostensibly to catch up on old times; Jacob is what some meanly would call “retarded” and Del was Jacob’s therapy assistant in the adult daycare facility where Jacob was learning “independent living” skills.

As they spend a pleasant meal together, they rehash old times, old acquaintances, and the vagaries of their lives since Del departed the adult daycare facility for greener pastures. As lunch progresses, they talk about a wide range of subjects, with Del slipping back easily into therapy assistant mode while discussing current issues and problems in Jacob's life, most pointedly, the "bad people" that have intersected Jacob's life in negative and painful ways. Using a problem-solving exercise that had been in use at the adult daycare facility called "what if," they work out possible solutions to the current "bad" person impacting Jacob's life.

During the exercise, Del lets slip that his life has taken a downturn: his wife has treated Del unfairly, kicking him out of the house for abuse and filing for divorce. Jacob senses Del is very distraught. He considers Del to be his “special friend” and is bothered how “bad people” get away with their transgressions while good people end up paying the price for being honest and decent.

Jacob decides to help Del with his problem.

Has Del unwittingly set up Jacob to exact vengeance in his stead... or was it planned?
