Best friends forever SELENA and JENNY haven't seen each other since high-school, where they were widely known (and feared) as "the Mean Girls." Selena has dropped in unexpectedly on Jenny in her new home in Boise, Idaho, where she has hidden herself away following the tragic death of her son ETHAN. Jenny's husband BILL is away on an endless round of overseeing the sale of the family business, leaving Jenny to deal with her personal demons alone.

Jenny is a stroke victim whose promising writing career has been put on permanent hold and Selene's dreams of Hollywood stardom have all but faded. The two reminisce about their high-school heyday and ruefully recall the pain and indignities they inflicted upon those they chose as hapless prey. They discover life was not kind to many of their victims, their dismal fates possibly a result of Jenny and Selene's mean-spirited actions. They also realize that life became one big suckfest for all, even them. As Selene says ruefully; for their victims, "at least they weren’t disappointed when they grew up. Everything still sucked for them."

As the evening wears on, Jenny reveals she believes her son Ethan has been trying to contact her from the other side. Her belief in the spirit world as well as blame for Ethan's death, has resulted in tension between Jenny and her husband Bill. Jenny also reveals that she believes a dead girl haunts the house they now live in, based on research she did for a book she hoped would signal her return as a professional writer.

The two friends call it a night and Selene leaves, promising to stay in touch with her best friend.

That's when odd things start happening but the question is, is it in Jenny's mind? Or is something from the spirit world trying to contact her?
